Mixed Reality (MR) Architecture refers to the frameworks, infrastructure, and components that enable the seamless integration of digital and physical worlds, allowing virtual objects to interact with real environments and creating immersive experiences that blend physical and digital realities.

For enterprise architects, Mixed Reality represents a convergence point between augmented and virtual reality technologies, requiring sophisticated architectural approaches to deliver coherent experiences. MR architectures typically encompass several layers: environmental understanding systems using computer vision and sensor fusion for spatial mapping; digital twin frameworks that maintain synchronized representations of physical spaces; rendering engines that realistically integrate virtual objects with physical environments; interaction systems supporting multimodal inputs including gesture, voice, and traditional controls; and spatial computing platforms that manage the relationship between digital assets and physical space. These systems must address significant technical challenges including accurate tracking and registration, realistic lighting and occlusion handling, and maintaining consistent performance despite variable environments. Enterprise architects must design for diverse deployment scenarios ranging from high-end dedicated MR systems to mobile platforms with limited computational capabilities, often employing edge computing approaches to reduce latency for critical rendering and interaction processes. Integration with enterprise systems presents additional complexity, requiring architects to create secure bridges between MR experiences and core business applications, IoT platforms, and collaborative tools. As mixed reality moves beyond isolated applications toward becoming a fundamental interface paradigm, architects should focus on creating scalable platforms that support multiple business use cases—from remote assistance and training to design visualization and operational guidance—while addressing enterprise requirements for security, manageability, and accessibility.
